This painting was inspired by 13 night shifts in California, after beginning day 1 as a 36 hour “Swing Shift”. I will always be proud of my days of cutting for the crew.
The chainsaw and the cut are only the focus of the sawyer when working. The operator is silhouetted against the background but his focused light from the headlamp illuminates the work being done to emphasize this point. With the small source of lights focused and working with ear plugs, as an operator you feel detached and isolated. That is why there is only the sawyer, and only his silhouette in this painting.
The background was created using a blend of brush work and palette knife to bring the fire and trees to life.
